Pie In the Sky - March Counterfeit Kit

Counterfeit Kit Challenge, (CKC), is a fantastic online scrapbooking challenge site that helps motivate you to use all of the scrapbooking supplies and tools that you have collected.  Having hoarded supplies for about 15 years, I love the whole premise.  I am sharing my collection and work for the month of March as Guest Designer at CKC; and, it couldn't be a more fitting inspiration kit to "counterfeit" for me.  Please take a look at my inspiration for the month.

The A Piece of Cake Designs January Cupcake Kit is the kit we are counterfeiting for March 2015.  It uses a favorite manufacturer, My Mind's Eye, (MME), for their patterned paper. The paper collection is MME Jubilee - Tangerine.  Although my kit, "Pie in the Sky", does not use any My Mind's Eye, the general mood of the papers can be easily represented by multiple manufacturers.  In fact, I used 9 today in my paper selection.  Please take a closer look.

My Patterned Papers A side
My Mind's Eye Jubilee - Tangerine
So, whereas the My Mind's Eye paper image shows both sides of eight papers, I matched one paper to each side, (with a little variation), and have a total of 16 papers in my main kit.  My papers date back to 2007.  The most notable in my collection are the paintable Prima papers in the upper right corner.  This was the perfect opportunity to encourage myself to finally use them.

Here are the counterfeit patterned papers, fabulous, B sides:
I kept them in the same order as my "A" side image.  I will use these sides when inspired

When A Piece of Cake Designs had their January Cupcake Kit posted, it shared the kit contents "in detail":

I will share as many images with the information that I can of the kit in detail. (You may want to get yourself comfortable because this is long).

A Piece of Cake Designs considers the papers, "The Cupcake Mix".  The "Mix" is represented  by the paper collections above.  A Piece of Cake Designs calls the embellishments, "The Filling", and "The Icing".  I have broken down the lists from their January kit along with my counterfeits below:

Webster's Pages - Hall Pass; Woodgrain Little Letter Stickers

The letter stickers for my kit are a little forgery; and, they will be shared on March 4 along with the amazing work of the Counterfeit Kit Club's Design Team.

1 x My Mind's Eye 'Jubilee - Tangerine' Mixed Bag of die cuts
  & my mix:

1 x Faber Castell Double Scoop Gelato; Mango
1 x Faber Castell Double Scoop Gelato; Snow Cone

I am replacing these fun embellishments with a different color adding medium, a watercolor set:

1 x American Crafts 'woodgrain' ribbon --I used a bright blue ribbon instead.
You can see it in the picture above.

3 x Studio Calico 'Heyday' Frame stickers (designs may vary)

I offered myself two counterfeit groupings to use.  One will be included with the aforementioned forgeries on March 4th. The other is a collection of acrylic, chipboard and ribbon frames.

2 x Jillibean Soup 'Stampables' Kraft Woodgrain Frames (designs may vary)

Mine are shown in the top left corner of this photo.  Not woodgrain but the colors work with my kit.

2 x Studio Calico 'Essentials' woodgrain flag clips
I love clips and added several from my stash, (even though they aren't woodgrain), along with a die cut to use as I see opportunity:

2 x Doodlebug Design Doileys; Swimming Pool
I chose to pull a couple doilies from my stash.  I left them neutral so that I could color them as I chose to any color when I knew that I wanted to use them.

Selection of orange sequins --
shown in their kit top left.  I didn't have orange sequins and considered another color but decided to take the opportunity to try to use some old stash instead.  I included some orange fancy brads and copper stickles in lieu of the sequins:
Are you still there? ;)

A Piece of Cake Designs included a couple of items exclusive to their kit club.  They call these, "The Cherry on Top".  They listed the following:
  • 2 x APOCD Exclusive Adhesive Cork Tags; one small & one medium size
I grabbed my only cork embellishments:

  • Packet of 2 'Cherry Flair' handmade by 'A Piece of Cake Designs' and exclusive to this kit
I managed to find a couple flairs in my stash that could coordinate with the kit.

And, I know that I need more embellishments to work with this month just about as much as I could use another slice of pie, but I added a few of my choosing.

Ribbon Add-On:

Sticker Add-On:

Cardstock and Specialty Papers:

If you study the images as much as I do, you might notice that my collection at the very top has a blue paper in it, whereas the MME Jubilee - Tangerine breakdown does not.  This is because the image that I initially found for the MME collection was for the 12 x 12 papers.  The A Piece of Cake Designs Cupcake kit includes the MME 6 x 6 papers; and, they are slightly different.   When I realized my mistake, all I did was add one blue BoBunny dots blue cardstock for my kit collection.

So why "Pie in the Sky?"

Definition: adjective
  1. The definition of pie in the sky refers to an idea, thought or dream that is extremely unrealistic, even to the point where it begins to seem ludicrous.
First, I liked the idea that my kit name could have a dessert inference, just like it's motivational kit.  But, I especially think that the size of the kit makes it unrealistic for me to complete in a month. That doesn't mean that I won't try!

I do think that The Counterfeit Kit Club is the best thing since sliced bread!!  And that's not sugarcoating it!  It truly takes the cake!  All idioms aside, I hope that you follow the hop, make a kit  and play along.  The girls in the group are as sweet as honey. Awww shoot, I just included another one.

All this food talk has made me hungry so I will part, and grab a bite, but leave you with a last foodful thought that is a little kit tip:

Mise en place is a French phrase that basically means 'put in place'.  When a top rated chef begins his/her daily work, the chef will start with organizing all the tools needed, prepping the food and sometimes cutting and measuring so that everything is ready to go and exactly where they know it should be.  It is an essential philosophy for the best run kitchen.
Picture from Bon Appetit
I love to apply the chef's strategy and pull items before I begin to work on my projects so that they are ready as I work on my design.  There is a whole psychology behind starting with a clean and organized set of tools and ingredients.  The more I practice these principals, the more I enjoy the process to creating my layouts, cards or other paper based projects.

Thanks for visiting!! Enjoy your day!! Hope that you play along and link up your work at The Counterfeit Kit Challenge blogs Monthly Link Up page.  Be blessed!!

  1. Janine! Your kit is fantastic and a perfect counterfeit of the original! Your paper choices are great and perfect substitutes for the original kit. I really think you did a great job of presenting the inspiration kit pieces and your own selections and choices. And how great that you've managed to include really old and new items in your Pie in the Sky - perfect name by the way! I chose an "airy" sounding kit. the inclusion of the water colours is a great idea and I think I might have to invest in some to get me moving in a more creative, artistic manner but not this month! Super tip on having everything in place. I have to have a clear and clean area to scrap, usually tidying up after each page. All my tools and items are close than and this really helps me zip along. I'm so much faster than I used to be! I think you are going to be an awesome guest designer this month and we are very pleased to have you with us! This is going to be a great month.

    1. I, actually, felt wrong when I put my tip together because at that time my scrap area was a mess. I had pulled so many things with my February kit that weren't coming together -- they were spread about. I ended up cleaning up and using your tip by putting a bunch of it in a give away bag for my younger sons art teacher. Now it is much better but will have to wait for my inlaws departure to get back into my space and create a true Mise en place. Thank you for the compliments! I can't wait to use the watercolors. I have no idea how much or little I will embrace them once I get started. It is going to be a great month. I loved seeing the amazing creativity already!

    1. Thank you Susan!! I'm hoping that I am energized to paint the Prima papers with the watercolors, and not too overwhelmed. The good thing that I'm realizing is that my patterned papers are not in big supply for my amount of scrapping. Therefore, I will need to work on the Primas for more, (or start working outside my kit ;) )
